Should I List My Hobbies on my Resume

Should I List My Hobbies on my Resume Should I List My Hobbies on my Resume You have many talents You can pull off atriple axel during your weekend figure skating meets. At last months lunker competition, you used your well-honed fishing strategies to snag an 18-pound bass. And your mixology skills are to die for just wait until people try your latest invention, the Double Cranberry Tom CollinsNo question, your mothers proud of you. And she should be, bubbeleh Youre amazingBut would a potential employer be equally impressed if they saw your hobbies on your resume?Hobbies and resumes can be a tricky combination. The purpose of a resume is to sell to a hiring manager and recruiter your ability to do a jobin such a way as to set yourself apart from the crowd. So, before including your championship tiddlywinks credentials on your resume, ask yourself a few questions1. Will My Hobbies Help Me Highlight My Skills and Abilities to a Potential Employer?I have a friend who hascompeted in Sc rabble tournaments. He was nationally ranked and traveled the country to play the game against the best players. Think about the skills involved in Scrabble. Its highly analytical, requires both verbal and mathematical skills, and makes you think on your feet to solve problems. For unterstellung reasons, Id consider including it on aresume.Likewise, an engineer who competes in robotics tournaments shows that they areinventive, analytical, and driven.2. Did I Attain Substantial Achievements in My Hobby? It can improve an employers perception of you if you have achieved the pinnacle of your pastime.Lets say you were selected for your countrys Olympic curling team. Even if you chose not to participate due to other life obligations, you can demonstrate that you exercised the discipline to be ranked world-class in something. This isnt limited to athletics, either. Perhaps you won a creative writing contest. It can count.3. Did I Hold Any Nonprofit Leadership Roles?Maybe you sit on the boa rd of a local charity or youre a Boy Scout troop leader helping youths develop themselves. Perhaps you give seminars to unemployed professionals on dressing for success. These all demonstrate a commitment to the community at large, but also show that you have seized opportunities to hold leadership and management positions.4. Could My Hobby Be Potentially Applicable to My Line of Work?Ive heard of situations wherein peoples hobbies werent officially related to a job but helpedthem get that job anyway. Salespeople who indicated that they play golf or tennis come to mind many deals get done on the course or court. Likewise, I know of an individual who listed photography on their resume and received an offer for an engineering role because the company had a veryniche position available that involved photographic equipment. Experience as a mixologist (i.e., bartender) might be of help if youre applying for any position in the food, hospitality, or alcoholic beverage industry.5. Is the Hobby Held in High Esteem?Remember, an employer reading a resume can be judgmental fairly or unfairly and including a hobby which a hiring manager or recruiter might find objectionable (or just plain silly) can be a risk. Try to be conscious of potentially controversial hobbies. For example, some individuals might find bartending objectionable if theyre teetotalers. Similarly, it may be impressive to some that you own the largest collection of Pez dispensers in the world, but an employer might view that as a frivolous pursuit and a waste of space on your resume. The bottom line is, if theres a chance that somebody could object to the hobby, leave it out. But if there is serious merit to your hobby that could truly add value to your candidacy for a job, then by all means find space for itScott Singer is the president and founder of Insider Career Strategies LLC, a firm dedicated to guiding job seekers and companies through the job search and hiring process. A jobbymoon, similar to a honeymoon or babymoon, is a trip taken after another momentous occasion in life - a career change. In the digital age when workers are always plugged in and stressed out, these trips are becoming increasingly prevalent. Jobbymoons are comparable to summer vacation as a child - in between school terms, you can enjoy RR without a care in the world. It is rare in adult life that you have time to travel and unwind where no career-related stress is nagging in the back of your mind. If you are planning on making a career switch in the near future, how can you incorporate a jobbymoon into your itinerary?Ask yourself - what do I want?Take some time to meditate on what it is you would like to accomplish with your jobbymoon. Do you want a simple vacation away, without the dread of work upon your return? A celebration for this momentous step in your career path? A find-yourself-type journey with a specific personal goal/intention? Or even just some screen-free down time to rest and reset before you departure a new job? Once you figure out what it is your body and mind is truly craving, you can get to planningHow to schedule a jobbymoonAn important first step is situation up your schedule to accommodate your Jobbymoon. While it might be hard to actually allow yourself to take the time you need, do not feel guilty about it A whopping 25% of Millennials leave PTO days unused because of the fear of vacation-shaming. If youre jumping from one job to another, stretch your start date another week to accommodate for the time off. Unless there is an immediate need to start ASAP, employers are often understanding about time needed during the transition. If youre nervous about as king, you could always tell your future boss that you had a trip planned during the next month, but dont want to take time off during the onboarding process, and therefore will reschedule before your start date.Working with your budgetOnce you have the schedule set, its time for the not fun, yet necessary, task of consulting your budget to determine how much you can spend on your jobbymoon. Perhaps a travel vacation isnt possible due to the lapse in salary while changing jobs. You can still take a week off to enjoy a staycation, away from the anxiety of having a boss to answer to. Another option - take a budget-friendly trip such as camping, visiting friends or family (bonus free lodging), or a couple nights at a local bed and breakfast. Any type of trip and time away from everyday life (sans work email) will rejuvenate your spirit before starting the new gigLast-minute travelWhen planning a jobbymoon, you may have a short window to make reservations. Once you accept a job offer, its standard to give your current company two weeks notice. If you stretch your start date out another week after that, youre looking at a 2- to 3-week time frame to book. Fret not You can still plan a great trip with a little flexibility. Sites like Airfarewatchdog scan last minute airline deals and promotions, you just need to be open to considering multiple destinations. Once you pull the trigger on a flight if you need quick lodging sites like HotelTonight offer competitive rates for unsold rooms. Or you can search Airbnb for homes that are available with instant book.Island paradise on a time crunchMaybe you cant get halfway around the world to Bali or Hawaii, but you can still find your own island paradise a little closer to home. For east coast residents, islands like Bermuda or Jamaica are a short 2- to 3-hour plane ride from major cities. These destinations not only offer gorgeous beaches but fascinating historic sites to visit as well. When time and budget are limiting fac tors, think outside the boxOff-the-grid digital detoxWhen you asked yourself what you wanted from your Jobbymoon if you answered digital detox. You might want to find a place to seriously unplug and practice mindfulness. For our friends on the West Coast, youre in luck If youre prepared to travel up north - were talking as far north in the US as you can go - then you can visit Ultima Thule Lodge in Alaska. Its located in a 12-million acre national forest, only accessible by bush plane and the nearest road is 100 miles away. It goes without saying theres no cell service or Wi-Fi, just vast and majestic nature. If youre looking for more of a zen experience, you can visit Golden Door Spa and Resort, located just outside San Diego. This paradise has been promoted as the place for those in transition. Guests can choose from multiple fitness classes, spa services, hiking, or spirituality workshops focused on acupuncture, hypnosis, meditation and more.Lastly, if you want to travel south o f the border, you can visit Rancho La Puerta Fitness Resort and Spa. This 3,000-acre Mexican resort, right over the US border, prohibits cell phones, has no TVs or computers and limited wifi access - just a strong focus on mind, body, and spiritual awareness.Ready to plan your jobbymoon? If youre in the midst of a career pivot, consider taking time for yourself between jobs. The person that finishes a job on Friday and starts a new one Monday, is the same person who experiences serious burn-out. If you take the time to unplug and reset after leaving a company - especially a stressful position- you will find yourself rejuvenated and energized to start a new chapter in your careerRichard Burrowes, Senior Director of Operations, Rose Hall Developments Ltd., studied bed and breakfast management in Vancouver and obtained a Bachelor of Commerce while working in AAA 4 and 5 Diamond hotel properties. The journey continued when he returned to his birthplace of Jamaica and began a career in the hospitality industry. This experience has allowed him to manage first-class resorts and people in Jamaica, St. Lucia and the Bahamas.

How Cool Hobbies Can Make You Better at Your Job - The Muse

How Cool Hobbies Can Make You Better at Your Job - The MuseHow Cool Hobbies Can Make You Better at Your JobThere are plenty of things that allow me to effectively run my writing geschftliches miteinander, like my commitment to clients and my ability to put my nose to the grindstone and write (even when I dont feel like it). Oh, and hiking.Hitting the trails and writing might seem unrelated, but theyre not- hiking helps me clear my head and come up with new, interesting ideas that, without fail, make it into my work. It also calms and centers me, which allows me to juggle multiple projects without feeling too stressed out. And a solid hike always makes me more upbeat and energetic- which is key when Im talking to clients or pitching new business. My hobby, without a doubt, makes me better at my job. And thats not uncommon. Taking the time to pursue hobbies can have all sorts of positive effects, including better stress management, increased creativity, and higher levels of job satisfac tion. You approach hobbies or passions with authentic curiosity and interest, says Marti Konstant, author of Activate Your Agile Career How Responding to Change Will Inspire Your Lifes Work. A hobby, especially one unrelated to your line of work, will shine a light on new ways of thinking or solving problems.Konstant, for example, considers running her form of meditation. Ive solved more work problems and come up with new ideas while on the running path, she says. Its also helped her relate to other executives and climb the ladder. Running marathons and half-marathons helped build street cred for me with colleagues, partners, and bosses, she explains. These athletic activities were openers for discussion. It helped me as I moved from manager to director to VP.No matter what you enjoy doing, chances are, it can make you a stronger employee or business owner. Not convinced? Lets take a look at how five other professionals used their very different hobbies to improve their work. 1. Impr ov Helps University Administrator Tyler Wilson Understand- and Support- Stressed-Out Law StudentsAs Assistant Director of Records at UCLA Law School, Tyler Wilson frequently works with frazzled students. Law school is a stressful time for students, with intense competition, little sleep, and the pressure of the time and money theyve invested in pursuit of a degree, says Wilson. Since our office controls enrollment, grades, and exams, we often deal very directly with students frustrations.Photo of Tyler Wilson courtesy of Tyler Wilson.Using his improv skills, he can listen carefully and suss out whats really going on with his students (and, more importantly, how to help them). Good performers listen to the words their fellow improvisers say, but listening extends far beyond the words we use. Learning improv gave me the aptitude to recognize how people communicate through their volume, their tone, and their body language, says Wilson. This lets me understand where students are coming from and whats motivating their behavior.Once hes figured out whats beneath the surface, he can tailor his response- whether its to offer an empathetic ear or use humor to defuse the tension. Some folks need someone who remembers how awful exams are. Some need a friend to empathize with their larger frustrations about the school, however irrelevant it is to the task at hand. Some need a clown wearing stupid shoes that they can make fun of, he explains. Improv gives me the flexibility to slip into any of those roles whenever its called for.2. Attending punker Shows Helps Social Worker Paige DeMontigny Better Relate to Her ClientsYou wouldnt necessarily think going to punk shows would make you a better social worker. But Paige DeMontigny, whos been attending since middle school, says her long-time devotion to the punk rock scene has helped her step out of her comfort zone, have new experiences, and connect with people from different backgrounds- skills she says are essential in her ro le as a social worker.Photo of Paige DeMontigny courtesy of Paige DeMontigny.DeMontigny grew up in an upper middle class town. But getting into the punk scene meant visiting venues in urban and rural areas all around New England, some as simple as a biker bar and some as secret as an apartment attached to a potato integrierter schaltkreis factory, says DeMontigny. It acclimated me to different environments that I would go into for work and took the mystique away, she adds. It encouraged me to travel, sleep in cars, get dirty. It anesthetized me to meeting people that looked different from me and grew up different ways.Being a punk rock insider also helps DeMontigny form better connections with her clients. It gives me a funny talking point during orientation icebreakers, she says, and its always something that gets a smile or second look from someone and creates a dialogue. 3. Playing the Piano Helps CEO Gene Caballero Make Tough DecisionsAs the founder of the startup GreenPal, Gene Caballero has a lot of decisions to make- and he credits the piano with helping him stay focused and able to make the right choices for his company, an online lawn care marketplace.Photo of Gene Caballero courtesy of Gene Caballero. My team and I were approached for venture funding and the decision of whether to take money was weighing heavily on me, says Caballero. Instead of going back and forth between the different options in his mind, Caballero sat down and played the piano- and found the clarity he was looking for. Anytime Im feeling overwhelmed or am having issues focusing, I know that my brain needs to reset and so I play, says Caballero. I probably played more piano in that week than I ever have.Ultimately, Caballero decided to forgo the investment, a call he felt was best for his business. Playing, he says, helped resolve any insecurities he had about the decision.4. Stand-up Comedy Helps UX Designer Christina Avellan Keep Her Cool (and Her Colleagues Laughing)Christina Av ellan loves stand-up comedy because it helps her think on her feet and make people laugh- both skills that come in handy at her job as a UX researcher for Walmart eCommerce.Photo of Christina Avellan courtesy of Christina Avellan.I dont get flustered, says Avellan, who performs stand-up in the Portland, OR area. For example, I was running a study this week for a high-visibility project, she explains. During one interview, both the participant and the stakeholders were having technical difficulties, and I was able to troubleshoot with everyone in a non-stressful, joking way, and had everyone laughing until our tools were back up and running.5. Go-kart Racing Helps VP of Technology Marcin Kloda Navigate Ups and DownsWorking in the technology sector definitely has its highs and lows. Thanks to go-kart racing, Marcin Kloda- VP of Technology and General Manager, Americas at the global software outsourcing firm Intive- knows how to take them in stride.Ive learned that races can be long an d have their ups and downs. It doesnt matter how you start, but how you finish the race, says Kloda. This type of big-picture mindset helps me better prepare for challenges at work and keeps me focused on the end goal.Photo of Marcin Kloda courtesy of Marcin Kloda.Racing has also helped Kloda stay humble as hes grown in his career. In racing, I have lost some races and won some races. There has always been someone faster, someone better, says Kloda. The humility hes learned is something that I carry with me to the workplace, and has helped me with my relationships with customers and employees. As you can see, hobbies can do more than help you have a great time- they can also help you have a great career. So what are you waiting for? Get out there and pursue that hobby. Your career will thank you

How Instagram Can Help You With Your Job Hunt

How Ins24 stundenram Can Help You With Your Job HuntHow Instagram Can Help You With Your Job HuntSocial media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are great for keeping in touch with your family and friends, and are also important tools for professional networking. But Instagram has now become a site of choice for companies to interact visually with their customers, and may be the latest and greatest way to help you in your job search. Here are 5 ways to use Instagram in your job searchBrand Yourself.A picture is worth a thousand words. In this sense, Instagram can be used as a personal branding machine. If youre interested in becoming a chef for a specific company, for example, deutsche post ag pictures to your account that show the best dishes you can make, or photos of you commanding a kitchen crew, then hashtag to get your name out there. Show that you are immersed in the food industry and that you love what you do.Dont be afraid to hashtag the name of your target company, so your p hotos will show up on their company page. This is perfect for branding, and not only will it connect you with other industry folk, but it can snag the attention of the company youre after, if your photos catch their eye.Become a Follower. If you have a company in mind that youd like to work for, or if you have 20 of them, make sure to follow what they are doing and connect to the other industry experts they are following. Find out company values and other organizations they may be connected to, whether they be work related, non-profit affiliations, etc. In this way, you can tweak your Instagram account to showcase your interest in all the things your desired company is interested in.You can also follow specific people or departments within a company. The benefit here is that you can see people/ companies who they have personally tagged, and then network with these people. If you want to know who is at the top of the hiring chain or who the most influential members of a company are, c heck out their website. You can also use this info to find and follow them on Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn, creating a networking windfall.Use Hashtags. One of the most effective ways to get a company to notice your Instagram account is to use hashtags. Use industry keywords as hashtags to describe pictures youve posted i.e. if you attended an important culinary conference or workshop, you could upload a photo of the darbietung with chef and (nameofconference), or the hashtag the conference is already using. This makes your photo searchable and easier to find by those who attended the event and other industry insiders- which could lead to a lot of connections. Hashtags also boost your photos placement in general search results. You never know who might wind up looking at your pictureTag to Self-Promote.You can also tag a specific company to get their direct attention. This act is more about blunt self-promotion, so make sure what youre posting is not only relevant, but that it conve ys what you want to portray about yourself.Do some company research and use applicable terms when you tag a company in a post. Lets say youre interested in working for a restaurant that specializes in Kobe beef. Instagram a picture of yourself praising their dish, preferably dining on it in their establishment, then tag a photo of your version of the dish. This will likely spark intrigue from the company- just as long as it looks good and its done in a respectful and non-competitive way.Tip Dont hashtag every single picture that you post, or youll dilute the worth of your hashtags and you will start annoying people (this is the last thing you want to do). Only tag the very best of your best work.Connect.Once youre following your desired company or companies, and have hashtagged accordingly, its time to connect, if you havent already done so. A great way to start is to comment on their own Instagram photos to spark a conversation.Ask a question, as this is a great way to get in touch with current employees or management. Or better yet, answer a question in response to posted consumer inquiries. This can garner acknowledgement from the company that you have the inside scoop and know what youre talking about. (Just make sure you do know what youre talking about if you try to answer a question. Not providing the right info can invariably tank your employment chances.)Social media is quickly becoming one of the fastest ways to find a remote job. Make the most of your Instagram account, and use this visual network to show employers who you are and what you can offer them. Landing your dream job may literally be a snapshot away.Readers, do you use your Instagram account to job hunt? Let us know how in the comments section below

My Journey to the C-Suite as a Millennial Executive

My Journey to the C-Suite as a Millennial Executive If I had to summarize my career in one word, it would be exhilarating.Over the course of 13 years, Ive had opportunities to mentor aspiring leaders, establish overseas operations, and run the global sale organization for the one company Ive been working for since graduating college.I started my career at global recruitment technology provider Bullhorn as an entry-level sales representative after I graduated from Babson College in 2005. At the time, Bullhorn was a fledgling startup poised to achieve some incredible milestones. I was thrilled to play a role in influencing the companys future. After receiving the opportunity to help Bullhorn expand its international operations at just 27 years old, I was lucky enough to find myself on an accelerated career trajectory that brought my wife and I to London and eventually returned us to the US as a family of four. While spending six years in London, I not o nly helped Bullhorn increase its European and Asia-Pacific user bases, but also opened numerous offices across mainland Europe and Australia. The most exciting parte of my journey has been working with an outstanding team. So many of the emerging leaders with whom I originally worked when I arrived in London are now running their own sales teams at Bullhorn, and it has been amazing to mentor them and watch them succeed. As the economy constantly changes, leaders must be willing to embrace ambiguity and thrive in the unknown. For the next generation of leaders looking to accelerate their career journeys, here is my adviceDitch the Traditional Five-Year PlanMy father always told me to have a master five-year plan which wasnt bad advice, of course but I resisted it. I never wanted to architect too far into the future because I wanted to live in the present.Instead, I looked1-2 years into the future and developed my goals around that timeline. Why? Because the technology landscape chang es incredibly fast, so goals that we set one year might not be relevant the next year. This also meansmy job will be different each year. Varying market demands and shifts will warrant new solutions to old problems. Therefore, my strategic vision has long focused on the opportunities and challenges in front of me at the moment. As a leader of tomorrow, you need to embrace change today. That will help create longevity in your career. Focus on what is in front of you and let those moments mold your goals. Youll become extremely versatile.Dont Overthink Whats Right in Front of YouWhen I interviewed for jobs after college, I envisioned working at a financial services company. With a business management degree, I thought it made the most sense to work in that sector. But something didnt binnenseem right to me when I interviewed with companies in this field. I never found what I was looking for in a career an agile workplace.Instead of opting for well-established companies, I decided to pla ce a bet on startup life. I figured the pace of that environment would allow to me flourish the most. When Bullhorn asked me to move to London, I immediately jumped at the opportunity. The benefits of opening and leading a new office in a new location certainly outweighed the risks of moving out of the country for the first time. If the opportunity didnt work out for unforeseen reasons, I knew that I could always return home.In order to grow your career, you must seize opportunities that are right in front of you. Dont overthink the outcomes or setbacks. Be bold, take charge, and grow. Its the only way to learn faster and further develop your skills.Speak Their LanguageAt the executive level, Im participating in strategic conversations about business operations and growth, and I need to position that information aseffectively as possible to my team. The majority of our 160-person sales team is comprised of millennial employees like myself, which means I need to translate our busines s vision into results my team understands. In other words, I need to speak their language. As were expanding and deepening our business strategies, I need to communicate with my leaders about how I see us executing those strategies based on feedback from my team.At the same time, I need to discuss with my team why those strategies are right for the business.Understanding the why and the what of your companys objectives is important for your success because it enables you to work toward shared goals. If you can decipher information and understand the big picture of how you and your team can make the most impact in your business, then youll position yourself as a valuable employee. The more valuable you are, the more chances you have to flourish.Creating a rewarding and meaningful career is one of the most exciting accomplishments you can achieve. It is a journey that you own, define, and shape, one where you can challenge yourself every day, overcome obstacles, and relish the opportun ities that will keep youmoving toward the next chapter. You may even find that you, too, can define your career as exhilarating.Mike Restivo is the chief revenue officer for Bullhorn.
