Talking Money Job Offer Negotiations Part 2 - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Last week a client called with the good news that they had received a good job offer from one of their most desirable employers. They were excited. I was happy, too. After getting beyond the (premature) celebration, my thoughts immediately turned to the next critical step in our process together: closing the deal! In my previous post (Talking Money: Job Offer Negotiations Part 1), we discussed times when you may decide to accept a job offer without negotiating. I also suggested how to keep your negotiating options open until you receive a written job offer. In this article, let’s assume you have received a written job offer and managed to keep your options open for possible negotiations. What you need to do next is to evaluate the offer before proceeding with (or deciding not to proceed with) negotiations. Here is an abbreviated version of the process I use in my practice. Answer these questions Do I have any other job offers in hand, firmly pending, or possible? Your answer to this question may color your choices regarding pursuing the current offer or turning it down without any negotiations. What are the positives and negatives of this offer? Draw a line down the middle of a blank page and make an exhaustive list of the pros and cons. What are the three to five pros and cons that are most important? This forces you to ignore the smaller items and focus on what is truly important, both positive and negative. How strong or weak is my negotiating position? Your careful evaluation of your situational leverage can make the difference between gaining $10,000, $25,000, or much more annual income (or other benefits, such as vacation time) and blowing it. This is the linchpin consideration that you must evaluate to the best of your abilities. Based upon my negotiating position, how strongly, moderately, or weakly have I decided I will negotiate if at all? You may decide at this point that you do not want to negotiate as there is always some risk associated with doing so. If you believe you are in a good negotiating position and want to lobby for a better offer, then you need to decide what you will consider to be a satisfactory resolution, how and when you will conduct discussions, and with whom you will have such discussions. Here are some questions to guide you Considering my top pros and cons I identified previously, what terms need to be changed to satisfy me and what specifically will make me happy? It is recommended you limit the number of terms (salary, bonus, vacation, etc.) to be discussed to two to four  and that you quantify your goals (Increase salary from $75,000 to $85,000, etc.). How will I introduce my desires, in which order will I introduce them, and with whom will I discuss them? It is critical that you plan out your strategies and the process you will utilize. I believe that a methodical, strategic approach to each step in your job search (and career) will provide you the best end results. Thats why I wrote Fast Track Your Job Search (and Career!) as a modern replacement for the aging What Color Is Your Parachute. Interview With Jenny Blake, Author of Life After College Recently, I was honored to interview Jenny Blake. Jenny is an  author, career and micro-business coach, and traveling yoga teacher. She provides thought-leadership for entrepreneurs, Generation Y and beyond through her uplifting blog Life After College and best-selling book of the same name (which was featured in Target’s 2012 graduation display). Her passion is in helping people ditch the rigidity of yesterday’s career ladder, and  instead, treat their careers (and lives) as dynamic as the constantly customizable apps on a smartphone. She also just launched her new website which you definitely want to check out at  jennyblake.me. Read Jenny Blakes book Life After College  if  you feel paralyzed without a defined road map â€" or  dont have a clue how to create one and you want to learn how to get what you want in your life after college. (P.S. This book isnt just for recent grads, this is an amazing book for all professionals at any age!) This is what Jenny wrote in the introduction of her book, There is no manual for the real world. In high school and college we have teachers, guidance counselors, and course requirements. But the minute we graduate it seems we are immediately expected to understand where to go, what to do and how to get wherever we’re going next-even when we have no clue where “next” is. For the first time in our lives, we feel paralyzed without a defined road map â€" or without any clue how to create one. I have been watching Jenny for a few years now and have watched her change her life from working at Google, to becoming an author, and now to becoming an entrepreneur. Jenny said that she made these big life changes because, I felt like I needed to follow this template that society laid out for me.  Buy a house, two kids, move up the ladder, etc.  But I got sick and my body started to say that this wasnt working.  So I followed my intuition. Here are a few highlights of my interview with Jenny Blake:   Think of the things you want to do, things you want to have, how you want to be or feel and new skills or education you want to get in the next six months, one year, and three years. Jenny is a firm believer that writing it down is the first step in actually making it happen. What new skills would take you from average to absolute rock start? Create a 1-year mini-vision statement. Imagine yourself completing that goal. When you find yourself doing things for other people, like things you  should do, slow down and think about what do you really want. If you are already burnt out, focus on what you can do for yourself that is rejuvenating and restorative right now.  Are you getting enough sleep? Eating well? Exercising? Getting outside? This is your foundation and it needs to be in place to manage the more stressful areas of our life. Two questions to ask yourself if you are feeling overwhelmed 1) What one thing would make the biggest impact in your life that really excites you? 2) What is one small tiny thing that you can do today? Work on it for at least 5 minutes, five days in a row and start at that micro level.  Even our biggest life changes happen in a series of small moments and decisions.  It all happens one step at a time so dont be afraid to start small. Be disciplined because discipline creates confidence and momentum. Have a morning ritual that you can look forward to. Jenny meditates every morning and reads blogs she loves. 6 truths about how your party life changes in second year - Debut Hey there, fresher. Youre probably knee-deep in first year right now. and all the seminar icebreakers and boozy excursions that come along with that. Youve heard the horror stories about the next two years and youve decided to get all the crazy out of your system now before it expires. But what if I told you that you didnt have to do all your living in first year? The party life exists in second year, my friend. You just have to reach out and grab it and remember these universal truths as you do. You won’t go out as much Image via Giphy This one’s a given really, isn’t it? You’re a big kid now, so I’m not going to BS you. Come second year, you may have less contact hours but you’ll get more work. Even scarier, that work will now count towards your degree. So you’re (probably) gonna wanna be sensible. It’s nothing drastic, but you’d be surprised how quickly 3/4 nights out a week becomes 2 when that first assessment is due around Reading Week.   But you actually stay out longer Image via Giphy On good nights, you party hard. On great nights, you party smart. Reckless abandon is the name of the game during first year. While the plan is to go hard until they put you in a cell or an ambulance, this approach usually ends with you tucked away in a taxi with your fellow tiny tots at 1:15am. But soon you’ll all grown up, my young apprentice. When it comes to nights out, you’ll have more experience and youll know your wild, drunken alter-ego inside out. Learning how to pace yourself better means longer, more satisfying nights out and that might just might make up for your less frequent adventures.   You realise house parties are wicked Image via Giphy Here’s a possibility you might not have considered. Who wants to get all dressed up and splash the cash on a bottle of Glen’s and an Uber, just to get VKs poured down you all night by complete strangers anyway? Likelihood is, unless you’ve made older friends, you don’t even know the joys of the house party yet. Grab 40 to 50 of your good pals, put them in a confined space with some alcohol and loud music and let the good times roll. That’s not to even mention that it’s cheaper, you have way more control, and you can actually have conversations. Trust me, house parties are great. When you hit second year, do more and go to more.   You change personnel Image via Giphy That ‘absolute legend’ you met on the second night of Fresher’s? You probably won’t ever see them again. Also, your first semester drinking crew is probably gonna carve up when people start deciding who they are going to live with. Plus, when you start picking up more extracurricular activities, chances are you’re gonna start going out with your society buddies too. Basically, you’ll start forming the squad that will take you right through to your graduation ball.   There are a lot less gimmicks Image via Giphy UV paint parties, neon parties, foam parties… What is it with nightclubs wanting  teenagers to cover themselves in stuff? Regardless, you might be thrilled or horrified to learn your days of Malia-style super-raving are probably over come next September. Gone too (we’d hope) are the days of paying your hard-loaned money to watch a Youtube personality, Take Me Out cast member or internet meme do a DJ set at Propaganda. Or worse, watch 3 members of S Club 7 do a poorly organised show in your local Popworld. YOU CAN DO SO MUCH BETTER.   But you try a lot of new things Image via Giphy Come next year, you’ll be way more savvy and be a little more familiar with the town you live in. You’ll have your favourite hangouts, you’ll have made friends in different circles, you’ll know which clubs make for the best nights out and which not to touch with a 15ft barge pole. All this helps you make better decisions, but it’ll also inadvertently turn you on to a whole lot of stuff you probably haven’t tried yet. Whether jazz nights or warehouse raving, upmarket clubs or dive bars, it’s important to embrace it all. So take heart, fresher. Effective Strategies to Build a Successful Career Today, many people are looking for a way to develop a successful career for themselves. In addition, a lot of people simply dont want to settle for every-day 9 to 5 office jobs. In fact, they want something more challenging and more exciting. Some people decide to start their own venture while others seek to improve their skills or learn new ones that will help them land a dream job. In any event, building a successful career doesnt happen overnight, unfortunately, and every individual must work hard to get there. However, getting to a point where youll actually have a successful career isnt that hard, to begin with, but only if you have a clear goal in mind. Getting there will be difficult if you dont plan the journey accordingly. With that in mind, here are a few strategies that will help you build a successful career. Develop a plan As mentioned before, developing a plan is crucial for building a successful career. The main reason is that by planning your career in advance, youll be able to determine the best course of action. Whether youre planning a career change or youre trying to determine whats the best job for you, youll need to have a vision in mind of where you want to be in the next 10, 20 or 50 years from now. Having a plan makes the rest of the process more seamless and less challenging. Furthermore, you have to define what a successful career means to you, in order to identify what to focus on. For example, to some people, a successful career means a good salary thats more than sufficient to sustain themselves and their family. To other people, a successful career means making a name for themselves. On the other hand, there are people who consider a successful career to be an ideal cultural fit within some company that will make them happy to work there. Learn new skills Having an abundance of skills is always helpful when building a successful career. Whether you learn new ones or hone existing skills is a matter of personal choice. However, if you want to ensure youre making the right decision, a bit of both methods will be quite beneficial. Therefore, take the time to research what skills are the most needed in your ideal career path and work on obtaining those skills. For example, work on obtaining both soft and hard skills that will not only make you more proficient but also a better person in general. Nowadays, you wont have to go back to school to gain additional education because you can find various courses and training programs online. The more you invest in yourself, the simpler it will become to finally reach your ideal career status. Of course, it will take some time for you to learn new stuff but it’s well worth the effort in the end. Obtain new experiences Today, work experience is almost as important as having the required skills when talking about ideal employment. The more work experience you have the more desirable candidate you become for companies looking to employ you. Truth be told, companies today prefer trained and experienced employees compared to having to invest in training employees themselves. If you wish to gain more experience, consider leaving your comfort zone and look for an experience abroad. Working in other countries might give you a new perspective and even help you learn the new skills required for your ideal career choice. However, just make sure you plan for necessities, such as obtaining travel insurance or planning for a budget before you move to a different country for work. That way, you can focus on whats important without having to deal with any inconveniences while abroad. Engage in active networking Networking is still very important not just for businesses or companies but for individuals looking for an opportunity to build a successful career. Even though we live in a primarily digital world nowadays, face-to-face networking events are still relevant. You should consider developing a personal and a professional network of contacts and acquaintances so you could progress in your field. Whats more, you should strongly consider attending any relevant networking events. That way, you can explore various opportunities that may be quite beneficial to you in the future. For example, you might gain valuable advice from experts in the field or meet a mentor who will coach you and advise you how to advance in your career. Meeting new people on networking events, who may be of some value to you at some point, is always an advantage when building your ideal career. That being said, dont be afraid to look for some help.
