6 truths about how your party life changes in second year - Debut
6 truths about how your party life changes in second year - Debut Hey there, fresher. Youre probably knee-deep in first year right now. and all the seminar icebreakers and boozy excursions that come along with that. Youve heard the horror stories about the next two years and youve decided to get all the crazy out of your system now before it expires. But what if I told you that you didnt have to do all your living in first year? The party life exists in second year, my friend. You just have to reach out and grab it and remember these universal truths as you do. You wonât go out as much Image via Giphy This oneâs a given really, isnât it? Youâre a big kid now, so Iâm not going to BS you. Come second year, you may have less contact hours but youâll get more work. Even scarier, that work will now count towards your degree. So youâre (probably) gonna wanna be sensible. Itâs nothing drastic, but youâd be surprised how quickly 3/4 nights out a week becomes 2 when that first assessment is due around Reading Week. But you actually stay out longer Image via Giphy On good nights, you party hard. On great nights, you party smart. Reckless abandon is the name of the game during first year. While the plan is to go hard until they put you in a cell or an ambulance, this approach usually ends with you tucked away in a taxi with your fellow tiny tots at 1:15am. But soon youâll all grown up, my young apprentice. When it comes to nights out, youâll have more experience and youll know your wild, drunken alter-ego inside out. Learning how to pace yourself better means longer, more satisfying nights out and that might just might make up for your less frequent adventures. You realise house parties are wicked Image via Giphy Hereâs a possibility you might not have considered. Who wants to get all dressed up and splash the cash on a bottle of Glenâs and an Uber, just to get VKs poured down you all night by complete strangers anyway? Likelihood is, unless youâve made older friends, you donât even know the joys of the house party yet. Grab 40 to 50 of your good pals, put them in a confined space with some alcohol and loud music and let the good times roll. Thatâs not to even mention that itâs cheaper, you have way more control, and you can actually have conversations. Trust me, house parties are great. When you hit second year, do more and go to more. You change personnel Image via Giphy That âabsolute legendâ you met on the second night of Fresherâs? You probably wonât ever see them again. Also, your first semester drinking crew is probably gonna carve up when people start deciding who they are going to live with. Plus, when you start picking up more extracurricular activities, chances are youâre gonna start going out with your society buddies too. Basically, youâll start forming the squad that will take you right through to your graduation ball. There are a lot less gimmicks Image via Giphy UV paint parties, neon parties, foam parties⦠What is it with nightclubs wanting teenagers to cover themselves in stuff? Regardless, you might be thrilled or horrified to learn your days of Malia-style super-raving are probably over come next September. Gone too (weâd hope) are the days of paying your hard-loaned money to watch a Youtube personality, Take Me Out cast member or internet meme do a DJ set at Propaganda. Or worse, watch 3 members of S Club 7 do a poorly organised show in your local Popworld. YOU CAN DO SO MUCH BETTER. But you try a lot of new things Image via Giphy Come next year, youâll be way more savvy and be a little more familiar with the town you live in. Youâll have your favourite hangouts, youâll have made friends in different circles, youâll know which clubs make for the best nights out and which not to touch with a 15ft barge pole. All this helps you make better decisions, but itâll also inadvertently turn you on to a whole lot of stuff you probably havenât tried yet. Whether jazz nights or warehouse raving, upmarket clubs or dive bars, itâs important to embrace it all. So take heart, fresher. You might not be going so hard any more but your second year party life is about to become more expansive and interesting than ever before. Feature image courtesy of Warner Bros. Effective Strategies to Build a Successful Career
Effective Strategies to Build a Successful Career Today, many people are looking for a way to develop a successful career for themselves. In addition, a lot of people simply dont want to settle for every-day 9 to 5 office jobs. In fact, they want something more challenging and more exciting. Some people decide to start their own venture while others seek to improve their skills or learn new ones that will help them land a dream job. In any event, building a successful career doesnt happen overnight, unfortunately, and every individual must work hard to get there. However, getting to a point where youll actually have a successful career isnt that hard, to begin with, but only if you have a clear goal in mind. Getting there will be difficult if you dont plan the journey accordingly. With that in mind, here are a few strategies that will help you build a successful career. Develop a plan As mentioned before, developing a plan is crucial for building a successful career. The main reason is that by planning your career in advance, youll be able to determine the best course of action. Whether youre planning a career change or youre trying to determine whats the best job for you, youll need to have a vision in mind of where you want to be in the next 10, 20 or 50 years from now. Having a plan makes the rest of the process more seamless and less challenging. Furthermore, you have to define what a successful career means to you, in order to identify what to focus on. For example, to some people, a successful career means a good salary thats more than sufficient to sustain themselves and their family. To other people, a successful career means making a name for themselves. On the other hand, there are people who consider a successful career to be an ideal cultural fit within some company that will make them happy to work there. Learn new skills Having an abundance of skills is always helpful when building a successful career. Whether you learn new ones or hone existing skills is a matter of personal choice. However, if you want to ensure youre making the right decision, a bit of both methods will be quite beneficial. Therefore, take the time to research what skills are the most needed in your ideal career path and work on obtaining those skills. For example, work on obtaining both soft and hard skills that will not only make you more proficient but also a better person in general. Nowadays, you wont have to go back to school to gain additional education because you can find various courses and training programs online. The more you invest in yourself, the simpler it will become to finally reach your ideal career status. Of course, it will take some time for you to learn new stuff but itâs well worth the effort in the end. Obtain new experiences Today, work experience is almost as important as having the required skills when talking about ideal employment. The more work experience you have the more desirable candidate you become for companies looking to employ you. Truth be told, companies today prefer trained and experienced employees compared to having to invest in training employees themselves. If you wish to gain more experience, consider leaving your comfort zone and look for an experience abroad. Working in other countries might give you a new perspective and even help you learn the new skills required for your ideal career choice. However, just make sure you plan for necessities, such as obtaining travel insurance or planning for a budget before you move to a different country for work. That way, you can focus on whats important without having to deal with any inconveniences while abroad. Engage in active networking Networking is still very important not just for businesses or companies but for individuals looking for an opportunity to build a successful career. Even though we live in a primarily digital world nowadays, face-to-face networking events are still relevant. You should consider developing a personal and a professional network of contacts and acquaintances so you could progress in your field. Whats more, you should strongly consider attending any relevant networking events. That way, you can explore various opportunities that may be quite beneficial to you in the future. For example, you might gain valuable advice from experts in the field or meet a mentor who will coach you and advise you how to advance in your career. Meeting new people on networking events, who may be of some value to you at some point, is always an advantage when building your ideal career. That being said, dont be afraid to look for some help. After all, no one can manage on their own, especially in the business world. Building a successful career isnt easy but it also doesnt have to be too difficult either. If you plan ahead and envision a path forward, youll be able to make the right choices and make the right decisions that will help you reach your dream career status. Minimum Wage amp; Fast Food New York State Moves to Raise Minimum Wage to $15
Minimum Wage amp; Fast Food New York State Moves to Raise Minimum Wage to $15 The ongoing push for higher wages in the United States has been piecemealâ"state by state, city by city. On Wednesday, the New York State wage board took that incrementalism to the next level, recommending a new $15 per hour minimum wage just for the stateâs fast food workers at restaurants with more than 30 locations. While a final decision is pending (and likely to be a yes vote by the state labor commissioner), the boardâs move brings the fast food worker protests full circle. Employees of fast food restaurants first walked off the job in New York City in November 2012 to demand higher wages, specifically $15 per hour. That single demonstration grew into coordinated strikes across the nation and ultimately reached a global scale. The wage boardâs recommendation would give fast food workers in New York State a separate minimum wage for the first time. The $15 per hour payâ"effective in New York City in 2019 and elsewhere in the state in July 2021â"will be a 70% increase from fast food workersâ current minimum wage of $8.75, the statewide rate. The new minimum wage is unique because it circumvents the legislative processâ"the state empowers the labor commissioner or a wage board to access whether pay for a particular job is sufficientâ"and because it contributes to a growing trend of minimum wage hikes that apply only to a specific sector of a state or cityâs economy. In September, the Los Angeles City Council approved an ordinance that gave workers at large L.A. hotels a minimum wage of $15.37 per hour. In June, some home health care aides in Massachusetts won a $15 per hour starting wage after five months of negotiations with Governor Charlie Bakerâs administration. âThis is the low hanging fruit model,â says Tom Juravich, professor of labor studies at University of Massachusetts Amherst. âYou work politically where you have opportunities.â New York Governor Andrew Cuomo proposed raising the minimum wage for fast food workers in May with an op-ed in The New York Times. He wrote that ânowhere is the income gap more extreme and obnoxious than in the fast-food industry.â But Cuomoâs targeting of fast food workers through the wage board process came after the state legislature failed to support his effort to raise the overall minimum wage to $11.50 in New York City and $10.50 elsewhere in the state. (New Yorkâs current minimum wage is set to increase from $8.75 to $9 at the end of the year.) âThese are strategic decisions by [worker] activists,â Juravich says. When they see a political opening, they take it. Itâs a something-is-better-than-nothing approach. âItâs not that theyâre saying other [workers] donât deserve more money, itâs just that they have a foot in the door,â he says. Once worker activists break down a door in one industry, they hope to go onto the next, Juravich says. That domino effect will get a jolt ifâ"say a few years from nowâ"an industry-specific minimum wage hike has not caused catastrophic consequences in terms of employment. In that sense, sectorial minimum wage hikes are just another aspect of the incremental movement for higher pay thatâs sweeping the nation as a comprehensive wage hike fails at the federal level. Right on cue, the Fight For $15 organization thatâs backed by the SEIU released a statement Wednesday championing the wage board decision and announcing that it has protests scheduled to take place in Tampa and a few other cities on Thursday. Entrepreneurs 5 Reasons Why You Should Use An Alternative Lender - Work It Daily
Entrepreneurs 5 Reasons Why You Should Use An Alternative Lender - Work It Daily Youâve always dreamed of quitting your boring job and starting your own business. You have the plan all mapped out in your head: youâll work from home to finally bring your big idea to life. After all, lifeâs too short to forever stay invisible inside your cubicle! But did you know that home-based businesses are less likely to qualify for a bank loan? In this day and age, finding money to nourish a business can be a challenge. If you're a business owner or youâre thinking about starting a business, you might want to consider using an alternative lender. Whatâs An Alternative Lender? According to Andrew Cravenho, founder and CEO of CBAC Funding, alternative lenders are lenders who lend to businesses that may not qualify for a bank loan. There are many reasons why a business may not qualify for a bank loan: Poor credit or no credit Home-based business Loan amount too small Prior bankruptcy New business Why You Should Use An Alternative Lender If this applies to your business, you should consider using an alternative lender to help you get your business on its feet. Here are five reasons why: 1. Capital âIn today's economy, businesses are having more difficulty trying to obtain a small business loan from a bank than at any other time in history,â said Cravenho. The main reason businesses are having a tough time borrowing money? Tighter restrictions on credit requirements. Alternative lenders help businesses obtain the much needed capital to operate their business effectively. 2. Creative Financing Options Alternative lenders use creative financing options such as invoice factoring to help a business raise the cash needed to grow or operate their business. Invoice factoring uses the equity locked up in their unpaid invoices to obtain the immediate cash they're looking for. 3. Credit Unlike a traditional bank loan, alternative lenders or asset-based lenders use the credit of the business's debtors to determine whether the money borrowed will be paid back on time. âThis is advantageous to a start-up or rapidly growing business because these types of businesses usually do not have the credit necessary to obtain a typical small business loan,â said Cravenho. 4. Interest According to Cravenho, small business loans require a business to pay back interest and principal on a monthly basis, regardless of whether or not the business made money that month. âThis can cause major problems for a business's cash flow and can sometimes cause a business to file for bankruptcy,â he said. With invoice factoring, a business doesn't have to worry about paying back the factoring company. Once the factoring company purchases the invoices from the business, it's up to the factoring company to collect on the invoice - leaving the business do what it does best, run its business. 5. Cash Flow Cash flow is the final reason why a new business should use an alternative lender as opposed to a bank loan to finance their business. With a typical bank loan, the bank lends a set amount of money to the business and its job is done. Alternative lenders continue to lend money whenever an approved debtor is sent an invoice, according to Cravenho. This helps a business free up working capital, allowing it to expand at an exponential rate. Donât let a lack of bank loans keep you from making your business come to life. Remember, you have options! If you want longer-term funding, a site like Pave might be a great match for you. Instead of owing a specific amount of money, you pay lenders a percentage of your future income. If you'd prefer a project-based boost, try Kickstarter or Indiegogo, and you'll know what type of audience to expect for your goods or services. Whatâs your business idea?
