Why more than half of your friends will wind up in jobs they dont want

Why more than half of your friends will wind up in jobs they don't want Why more than half of your friends will wind up in jobs they don't want I recently worked with a candidate who, on paper, had a promising start to his career. Right out of college, he took a job with a Fortune 100 company. The pay was incredible for an entry-level role, and he had the prestige of working for a respected brand immediately after graduation. And yet, he absolutely hated the job. But because he didn’t want to get the “job hopper” label, he stuck with it.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!He eventually quit after a few years. But he was feeling so burned out that when he took his next job, he couldn’t give 100 percent. He was let go. So, at 28, he asked my team to help him find a job he really enjoyed. We did find him that role, and he finally has a job he’s thriving in.Of course, he’d much rather have found it six years earlier. And he’s not alone in his frustration.  One in three  college grads are underemployed, and  ov er 70%  of employees nationwide are looking for something new. That brings us to the reason so many of your friends will wind up in jobs they hate after graduation: college grads get really bad advice about choosing a job.  When recent grads come to me for help, I tell them to ignore the common advice they’ve been getting about the  job hunt. If you don’t want to wind up in a job you can’t stand, on a career path you have no interest in, then you may want to do the same and be cautious of the following advice:“Join a big, brand-name company.”After graduation, almost everyone will tell you to join a brand-name company- a tech giant or a “big four” firm- because people believe you’ll be set for the rest of your career by starting there. They argue those companies already have built-in business models that work. They have structured processes in place to help you grow and develop your skills. The reality is, focusing the job search on a few brand-name companies is a poor s trategy for most graduates. If you  only  consider companies with a certain level of name recognition, that means you’re also excluding a huge number of amazing companies that might be the perfect start to your career. And even worse, you’re mistakenly considering companies that may be a  terrible  fit.Your goal should be to find the right company for you- one that offers a supportive work environment and plenty of opportunities to learn and grow. By narrowing your perspective to a few name-brand options, you risk ending up at a prestigious company with a job you can’t stand.“Prioritize the paycheck.”The reason you hear this advice is pretty simple: a lot of recent grads have loans to pay back. You’ve got rent to pay. You want to travel, hang out with your friends, and enjoy your 20s. When you consider all of that, it’s little wonder why you’d jump at the chance for a high-paying job.But let’s think about this in the context of your entire  career. Say you find a job that pays $50,000. It really interests you, and the company seems like it has a great culture. But you also have an offer on the table for a job that pays $70,000. It’s more money, but you’re not sure if the role is what you really want to be doing, and the culture seems off.For most recent grads, the decision is a no brainer. Take the money and run.The thing is, if you don’t enjoy your job, you’re not going to do it well. And if you’re not putting in the effort, you risk stunting your growth or even being fired.I’m not saying you need to  love  your job. But it needs to be a good fit. It needs to have a management style and a team environment where you feel supported- where you can learn and grow. Because if you’re doing great work and constantly learning, even at a lower initial salary, you’re setting yourself up for advancement, a successful career, and a higher paycheck down the line.To block bad advice, figure out what matters to you and research companies that fit your criteria.By ignoring prestige and a paycheck, you’re focusing on companies that can offer you a great culture, a competitive salary, and just as much opportunity for growth- if not more. The only challenge is that because these companies don’t have the same name recognition, you’ll have to do a little work on your own to find them. Figure out what’s important to you.  Do you have a specific level of compensation or a certain industry in mind? What type of culture are you looking for- isolated or collaborative? Write it all down so that you have a frame of reference when you begin researching companies. Research on Glassdoor and other review sites.  Start looking at companies in your area with great reviews. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve heard of them or not. Remember, you’re not just looking for an impressive name, you’re looking for a great place to work. Our team at  Edvo  follows this advice closely by interviewing every company we partner with to validate it’s a good place to work for our candidates. Make a list of promising companies, then learn more about them.  If you find a company you can get behind and a product you want to work with, look at their career page. You can learn a lot there. Do they talk up their culture, their team, or the benefits package they offer? Get on LinkedIn, find people who work at the company, and message them.  Say something along the lines of, “Hey, I’m about to graduate. I’m doing research on great companies with missions I can get behind. Your company was one of them, and I wanted to see if you were open to a 15-minute phone call. It’d be great to hear about your experience there.” It isn’t impossible to find a job you enjoy right out of college. But the first challenge you need to overcome is to stop listening to bad advice. There’s nothing wrong with a big paycheck at a brand-name company, it just shouldn’t come at the expense of your  career development  and long-term happiness. This article first appeared on Minutes.

2016 Oscar Nominees Career Paths to Success

2016 Oscar Nominees’ Career Paths to Success 2016 Oscar Nominees’ Career Paths to Success 2016 Oscar Nominees’ Career Paths to Success Even your favorite stars had to work hard to get where they are today. [TWEET] If you're like the rest of us, you're getting your Oscars tux or designer gown ready for the red carpet this weekend. Well, you're probably not doing exactly that, but don't let that stop you from getting excited about the upcoming Oscars. The Academy Awards are considered to be the most prestigious of award shows. During award season, the world's most well-known cinematic professionals receive recognition for their hard work throughout the year. Some of the big names we're excited to see include: Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Jennifer Lawrence, Cate Blanchett and a favorite of mine, Christian Bale. When I hear these names, along with the other nominated actors, I think of how lucky they are to be where they are today. However, it's easy to forget that just like the rest of us, they had to work hard to build their careers. As glamorous and talented as these actors are, they're still human. None of these actors woke up and ended up at the Oscars, they all had to deal with rejection and uncertainty just like we do. The job search can be a daunting process, but the inspirational journeys of your favorite actors should give you some hope. Leonardo DiCaprio Leonardo DiCaprio is nominated for best actor in a leading role this year for his performance in The Revenant. This is his sixth nomination for an Academy Award, and will hopefully be his first win. While he has a long history of memorable roles, a few in particular come to mind when I hear his name. A few big ones include What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Catch Me If You Can, The Departed and Titanic. Surprisingly enough, he didn't land a big starring role right off the bat, he started off in commercials. He was also a cast member in several television shows, including Growing Pains and Parenthood. Due to his undeniable talent and hard work, he got his big break in Romeo + Juliet, which led to his ongoing, prosperous career. Brie Larson Brie Larson is a name you are probably hearing a lot of these days due to Oscars buzz. She got her big break in this year's film, Room. Although you may not have heard her name as frequently as some of the other Oscar contenders, she's had an impressive career up to this point. Brie started out as a television actress in the late 90's, making appearances in Raising Dad, Ghost Whisperer and later, The United States of Tara. You may remember her from the hilarious 21 Jump Street and last year's film, Trainwreck. However, her breakout role in Room is what catapulted her career into the big leagues. Although Brie Larson hasn't been as well-known throughout her film career as Matt Damon, that's not to say she hasn't had success up until this point. Sometimes, it takes that one role to really get your name out there. With this Oscar nomination, she will undoubtedly have a long career ahead of her. Eddie Redmayne Eddie Redmayne is another name we're excited to hear back at the Oscars this year. He previously won the Oscar in 2014 for his role as Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything. Before becoming a full-time actor, Eddie attended school in Cambridge where he studied art history. He made appearances in various theatrical productions including Oliver! and The Twelfth Night. He also held minor roles in a few television shows in the early 2000's. Eddie went on to pursue a modelling career before acquiring some of his big film roles. His film career began in 2006 when a casting director discovered him in a play and cast him as Alex Forbes, a minor who killed one of his schoolmates, in the movie Like Minds. From there, Eddie went on to have a very successful career. Some of his biggest roles were in the films The Other Boleyn Girl, Les Miserables, The Theory of Everything and his current Oscar nominated role in The Danish Girl. All of these actors have paid their dues to reach this point, none with a particularly easy journey. Their successes show us that with hard work and patience, anyone can achieve their goals. If you're in the midst of switching careers or trying to move up in your industry, keep your eye on the prize and your commitment will eventually pay off. Ready to find your dream job? The Legal Advantage

The Legal Advantage The Legal Advantage The Legal Advantage Engineering and law are two fields that require intensive study. Succeed in either and youve accomplished something. But, if you can succeed in both, there are more opportunities than you might think. Unexpected Returns After Kelly Kubasta received his mechanical engineering degree from the University of Texas at Austin, he decided to continue on at the school for his legal degree. Many engineers were finding it more valuable to get three to five years in the real world and then go back for an MBA, he says. For me, I was not in a position where I felt confident that I would want to stop my career midway and go back so I looked for an option that would suit me right away and that was law school. What he didnt expect was the advantage his engineering studies gave him as an intellectual property lawyer. The ability to analyze complicated concepts and having strong public speaking skills are advantages in acquiring both an engineering and law degree. I can break down complicated concepts and translate them into understandable pieces that non-technical individuals cant understand, says Kubasta. I can remember picking up inthree or fourminutes the key aspects of an invention at issue in a court case that took my colleague, who has an electrical engineering degree, 25 to 30 minutes to drill down to what the real issue was. Thats valuable. It also helps him in picking expert witnesses. You have to find out what is the pivot point of the case that will take the case in your favor or against you, he says. Once you identify that you look for the witness with expertise and skills that best matches your critical issue in the case. With me, my engineering background helps me filter. So what are areas engineers may have difficulty in when it comes to becoming a successful lawyer? Public speaking is not always the most fun thing to do for an engineer, Kubasta says. So its getting over that hesitation and getting comfortable in front of a large group of people where in some shape or form they are judging you. To get over it took repetition. And I find that the more familiar with the subject matter, I am the more confident I am. Patent Knowledge And law school itself, Kubasta says, may require a change of thinking. The exams and testing are very different than engineering, he says. In engineering theres a right or wrong answer but in law school you learn that most cases are not a right or wrong answer but picking an answer and supporting it (with evidence). David Cornwell, also an intellectual property lawyer, is actually in a firm with several employees who are both lawyers and mechanical engineers. I protect patents, he says. When I deal with inventors they definitely want someone with my engineering backgroundif theyve come up with a new transmission, they dont want to talk to someone who doesnt understand what they do. If it involves heat transfer thermodynamics, they dont want to spend money to get a lawyer up to speed. A law degree also provides an advantage to those creating engineering products, according to Cornwell. Engineers who learn law can come up with a breakthrough invention without maybe blowing their patent rights, he says. Ive had to turn some clients away because they drafted a lousy contract with the person they co-developed something with. Or you work for a company in the daytime and go home and develop an invention and dont realize what would belong to you or them. Hes also used his knowledge to represent large companies, from Medtronic to Reebok. For an athletic shoe, you have to know about areas such as physiology and for a company like Medtronic, its knowing about that and things like fluid flow, he says. To Cornwell, opportunities for a mechanical engineer with a law degree are growing. I think there are not enough good people who have technical degrees and law degrees in this economy, he says. A lot of patent firms are hiring and we need engineers and scientists who can practice. Believe me! Eric Butterman is an independent writer. Engineers who learn law can come up with a breakthrough invention without maybe blowing their patent rights.David Cornwell, intellectual property lawyer
